Planning Musts Before You Start a Makeover

To avoid costly and embarrassing mistakes when planning a home renovation project, make sure you measure and map every component of your proposed renovation. Here are some guidelines to live by before you make purchases or hire a custom cabinetmaker.

  1. Plan your room on paper. Space planning is easy to skip, but it’s the best stage to catch potential problems, such as pieces which will not fit through doorways or up a staircase. The easiest solution is to draw your room on graph paper and use a scale such as ¼ inch or ½ inch to a foot. Then, make cutouts of the cabinets or furniture pieces you plan to place in the room, and arrange them on your floorplan.
  2. Measure everything. If you’re planning to purchase cabinets or a piece of furniture, find out the measurements and use masking tape to mark where the piece/s will be placed on your floor. Alternately, you could pile up boxes to get an idea of how the furniture will look space-wise. Also, use a tape measure to “walk” large or long pieces through your doorways to ensure they will clear the entrances.
  3. Consider function. How the room will be used will go a far way in determining furniture. For example, deep comfy seating may be perfect for watching TV but will not be best suited for more formal settings.
  4. Keep a file. Create an idea book in which you store photos of the ideas you really like, along with notes on why you’re drawn to each piece. This will be particularly helpful if you’re making decisions with a spouse or partner. Filing fabric samples, paint chips, wood tone samples and flooring samples — all available from your dealer or other supplier — is also a smart way to plan your room and narrow the selection process.
  5. Prepare a budget. This is the best way to stay on track, so you get the result you’re looking for. Planning also helps avoid impulse buys that can diminish the look your want. Buy quality over quantity, and buy fewer pieces. But make them special.
  6. Prepare to depart from your budget. You may decide to reallocate funds from one item to another while still keeping the overall budget in balance. For example, if you find a piece of furniture that knocks your socks off, get it. Then, trim your budget elsewhere.
  7. Ask for help. Comfortable with the remodeling choices you’ve made so far? Great. Getting the opinion of a designer could help you avoid costly mistakes, narrow down sourcing options and help you move ahead with added confidence.
  8. Plan the transition. Bringing in new furnishing and a new look means finding new homes for some of your favorite older furniture pieces. Giving new life to your favorite old furniture may be as simple as fitting a slipcover over a comfy armchair. Or, you may choose to give a favorite table to Uncle Charlie, or send your sofa to a resale store.
