28 May The Kitchen as Entertainment Central: Trust Grabill to Execute the Most Intricate Details
If you like entertaining and you have a big family you want to enjoy while you’re cooking up a storm, it helps to have a big kitchen, and an efficient kitchen. Add a classic look combined with clean, contemporary lines and, if you’re a designer, you have more than a few details to attend to.
That’s where “working with a company like Grabill really makes it a pleasure,” says Jennifer Griffin, Interior Designer with Griffin Interiors, Wenham, Mass., and Northeast Kitchens in Middleton, Mass. Her client has a five-bedroom house, four grown children and a first grandchild, combined with another host of sisters, nephews, nieces and friends that often come over.
Working with an architect, “the client added considerable square-footage to the kitchen,” said Jennifer, who had done some previous decorating and design work for the homeowner. Now Jennifer was called upon to design a space with the latest appliances and ample and handy storage behind cabinet doors and custom drawers, with everything tucked away and out of sight behind unbroken lines of door paneling.
Jennifer explained that the client “wanted it bright and light and clean, where everything has its place and every place is hidden inside the cabinets. Even the lighting was recessed to keep the room open and allow full view to the outside, from the island to the banquet seating, to the Red Sox game playing in the nearby family room. No pendant lighting here, which is very different.”
Jennifer chose Grabill’s Aberdeen Indor style, finished in classic Antigua white on maple. The Antigua finish helped enhance the room’s brightness for the side of the house that only saw the sun in the late afternoon, while adding warmth with its creamy-white color. For a piece of elegant contrast, Jennifer also designed a table for the window seat area that she had crafted by a local woodworker.
A big island with seating for four and cooktop on a granite counter provided the centerpiece with plenty of room for helpers to lend a hand. Pull-out storage and drawers for pans, knives, dishes, cooking oils, spices and other elements of a chef’s desire, are all within easy reach to either side of the cooktop or in the wall of cabinets behind. Jennifer called the island “tricky” as the cooktop has a down vent, “so we had to extend the sides of the cabinets and make the back panel a little extra thick to support the countertop,” she explained.
Fortunately, “Grabill is amazing with any custom work. They can literally do whatever you want. If you can draw it, they can build it. The layout department goes over every design intent with the designer, so that it all comes together seamlessly.”
“A big kitchen like this has a lot of detail,” Jennifer confirmed. Whether it was adding an extra inch of depth to each cabinet to make appliance and cabinet panels flush, or customizing under-seat storage and wood top, there was a mass of details Grabill fit together to make it come out right. “They were terrific with those details. It’s just an amazing company to work with,” she said.
“The client absolutely loves the kitchen,” said Jennifer. “They have entertained a number of times now with friends and family. The woman’s monthly book club also uses the space. The homeowners wanted a space for people to move around in a less traditionally defined way, where they can talk to people while they are cooking. They are getting a lot of great feedback on the beautiful cabinets and the wonderful layout.”
All those details have clearly added up to a great place to have a party … and to enjoy making special memories with family and friends.
